Stephen King – The Tommyknockers

Stephen King – The Tommyknockers
Publisher: Signet (April 20, 1993) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 0451178424 | EPUB + MOBI | 752 pages | 0.7 mb + 1 mb

King’s new novel, a numbing variation on Invasion of the Body Snatchers, offers its own best commentary on itself. Nearly one-third of the way through the 560-page book, protagonist Bobbi Anderson, a writer of westerns, describes what she has stumbled upon in her backyard to her friend Gardener, an alcoholic poet: “It was a flying saucer. No self-respecting science-fiction writer would put one in his story, and if he did, no self-respecting editor would touch it with a ten-foot pole.. . . It is the oldest wheeze in the book.” After the vampirish Tommyknockers in the spaceship have wrought their evil magic upon the inhabitants of Haven (Tommyknockers live on the blood of comatose humans circulated through mind-reading PCs connected to VCRs), the unfortunate townspeople have, it seems, “become” (the word, over-used and never explained, is King’s) “something else” (the vague words are also the author’s). The “gadgets” of the town “become” living beings that kill (there are marauding hedge cutters and Coke machines, Electrolux vacuums, Yamaha motorcycles and flying smoke detectors ) and The Tommyknockers is consumed by the rambling prose of its author. Taking a whole town as his canvas, King uses too-broad strokes, adding cartoonlike characters and unlikely catastrophes like so many logs on a fire; ultimately he loses all semblance of style, carefully structured plot or resonant meaning, the hallmarks of his best writing. It is clear from this latest work that King himself has “become” a writing machinethis is his fourth novel since It was published 14 months ago; the faithful readers not overwhelmed by his latest fictional “gadget” are likely to wonder, as poet Gardener does near the novel’s end: “What had it all been for? He realized miserably that he was never going to know.”

Jonathan Lethem – You Don’t Love Me Yet

Jonathan Lethem – You Don’t Love Me Yet
Publisher: Vintage (April 8, 2008) | Language: English | ISBN-10: 140007682X | EPUB + MOBI | 240 pages | 0.1 mb + 0.2 mb

With his sixth novel, You Don’t Love Me Yet, Jonathan Lethem continues to show off his dexterity with the form, following up the coming-of-age epic The Fortress of Solitude with a dreamlike, comic portrait of the Los Angeles art scene. Lethem craftily sets up his ruse with a letter of complaint from Falmouth Strand (a seemingly minor character) who warns us that the book we are about to read completely misrepresents the truth. Falmouth is a former installation artist who has turned from sculpting objects to “manipulating people’s despair, pensiveness, ennui.” For his latest project, he has posted signs around Los Angeles: “Complaints? Call 213 291 7778.” The novel centers around Lucinda (the perfect, unwitting instrument for Falmouth’s manipulation), a bass player in a would-be indie rock quartet with nearly enough good songs for a 35-minute set (if you don’t count the two they don’t like anymore). Lucinda has vowed to stop sleeping with the band’s lead singer Matthew (for real, this time), launching a search for true love as drunken and misguided as the band’s search for a decent name. She abandons her upscale barista gig to answer complaint calls for Falmouth’s conceptual art piece. Before long, she finds herself drawn to a regular whose curious words are “like a pulse detected in a vast dead carcass” of daily complaints. By way of Lucinda, the “genius” complainer’s words spark the band’s next song, setting them on a shaky upward trajectory all too familiar in the art world. Various characters want (or don’t want) to take credit for the song’s apparent success, but who deserves it? The complainer who nonchalantly rattled off the words, Lucinda who wrote them down, the remaining band members who collaboratively put them to music, or Falmouth himself, who passively engineered the whole thing?

The Grand Design: Strategy and the U.S. Civil War

The Grand Design: Strategy and the U.S. Civil War
Publisher: Oxford University Press | ISBN: 0195373057 | edition 2010 | PDF | 512 pages | 5,2 mb

f the tens of thousands of books exploring virtually every aspect of the Civil War, surprisingly little has been said about what was in fact the determining factor in the outcome of the conflict: differences in Union and Southern strategy.

In The Grand Design, Donald Stoker provides a comprehensive and often surprising account of strategy as it evolved between Fort Sumter and Appomattox. Reminding us that strategy is different from tactics (battlefield deployments) and operations (campaigns conducted in pursuit of a strategy), Stoker examines how Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis identified their political goals and worked with their generals to craft the military means to achieve them–or how they often failed to do so. Stoker shows that Davis, despite a West Point education and experience as Secretary of War, failed as a strategist by losing control of the political side of the war. His invasion of Kentucky was a turning point that shifted the loyalties and vast resources of the border states to the Union. Lincoln, in contrast, evolved a clear strategic vision, but he failed for years to make his generals implement it. At the level of generalship, Stoker notes that Robert E. Lee correctly determined the Union’s center of gravity, but proved mistaken in his assessment of how to destroy it. Stoker also presents evidence that the Union could have won the war in 1862, had it followed the grand plan of the much-derided general, George B. McClellan.

Michael Howard – Clausewitz: A Very Short Introduction
Publisher: Oxfоrd Univеrsity Prеss | 2002-05-16 | ISBN: 0192802577 | PDF | 96 pages | 1.03 MB

Karl von Clausewitz (1780-1831) is considered by many to have been one of the greatest writers on war. His study On War was described by the American strategic thinker Bernard Brodie as “not simply the greatest, but the only great book about war.” It is hard to disagree. Even though he wrote his only major work at a time when the range of firearms was fifty yards, much of what he had to say remains relevant today. Michael Howard explains Clausewitz’s ideas in terms both of his experiences as a professional soldier in the Napoleonic Wars, and of the intellectual background of his time.
